Winter Session

The Winter Session at LAKAWA School of Kiteboarding is THE time to learn to kite. Snowkiting, winter's version of kitesurfing, is by far the easiest way to get into the sport. NEW for 2009, we've developed a Lecture Series schedule, so you can plan when to take your class and get the info you need to begin riding, on your own or through further instruction.

Lecture: Snowkiting 101
This the foundation class for all snowkiting. This class is intended as an introduction to the sport here in Minnesota. We’ll cover Kite theory, flying practices, and safety. We start you off with the basic information, how and why a kite flys. We’ll teach you how to increase and decrease the power from the kite. How to use that power to ride across the wind and into the wind. Even though this is not a hands on class, putting the theory in your head will ensure your first flights are safe and controllable and that you’ll be riding in no time.
This class will equip you with the knowledge needed to start the sport safely, whether on your own or with further instruction. If you choose to take it on yourself, we will lay out the steps we recommend for this. This class is a prerequisite for all of our riding classes.

Lecture: Weather 101
Unlike most sports, kiteboarding is dependant upon the wind. No wind means you can’t ride. Determining when and where it’s going to blow will make your life a lot easier. You won’t take the afternoon off and drive to the lake only to find drooping flags, or worse it’s been a few weeks since you’ve been out and you take on a day-long project only to watch the trees bending over all day.
Unfortunately the weather on the TV news or even the Weather Channel only give you part of the picture.. With some basic knowledge you can watch the same models they look at and predict relatively precisely what the wind will be doing throughout the day.
We’ll cover the fundamentals of what causes wind, How to predict wind, where to go for the best Information and how to read weather changes from cloud patterns.
